23 Track Ga Tech Preview

Track & Field Heads to Atlanta for Georgia Tech Invitational

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina men's and women's track & field teams head to the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., this weekend for their final tune-up before hosting the 2023 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 8-9.
 
The two-day Georgia Tech Invitational begins on Friday at 12:30 p.m. with the hammer throw. Additional field events including the shot put, javelin, women's pole vault, and long jump begin at 5:30. Track events also start at 5:30 p.m. with the women's 100-meter hurdles and conclude with the men's 5,000-meter around 9:45 p.m. Saturday action starts at Noon with the high jump, men's pole vault, triple jump, and discus before track events start an hour earlier with the 4x100-meter relay.

In addition to the Catamounts and the meet host Georgia Tech, Southern Conference foes Chattanooga, Mercer, and Wofford have entries. The field also includes student-athletes from Alabama-Huntsville, Anderson (SC), Appalachian State, Belmont, Bob Jones, Campbell, Carson-Newman, Catawba, Central Methodist, Charleston Southern, Claflin, Clemson, Concordia University-Chicago, Cornell, FIU, Florida A&M, Florida Southern, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Lee (Tenn.), Life, Lipscomb, Miss. University for Women, Mississippi College, Montevallo, North Florida, SC State, SE Missouri, Tampa, Tennessee Tech, Tuskegee, UCF, UNC Asheville, Valdosta State, VCU, WPI, and Yale.   
 
Last weekend at the Catamount Classic, WCU student-athletes recorded seven event victories and posted multiple season and personal bests. On Friday, Jonathan Lehe took first place in the men's pole vault with Javon Brown winning the men's long jump, and Jackson Livingston taking the men's javelin. Kate Mattison narrowly missed setting a new school record as she won the women's 1,500-meter run. Saturday winners included Michael Harris in the men's 400-meter dash, Jonny Sherwood in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, and a second event victory for Javon Brown in the triple jump.
 
The Catamounts are off next weekend before closing out the season with host duties of the 2023 SoCon Outdoor Championship at the on-campus Catamount Athletics Complex.
