Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina and first-year head cheerleading coach Lauren Brooks have announced an open tryout for WCU students to join the 2023-24 Catamount cheerleading squad. The two-day tryout is scheduled for Thurs., Sept. 14 and Fri., Sept. 15 in the Camp Lab Gymnasium on the WCU campus.
Check-in for both days begins at 5:15 p.m. with the tryout to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include learning material such as sideline and dance routines, stunting, and tumbling skills that are to be performed in front of the coaching staff. The process also includes a timed mile run, a short interview with the coaching staff, a Catamount Athletics quiz (study guide will be provided), and a $50 tryout fee due at check-in.
WCU cheerleading is a small, coed squad that performs at home Catamount football, men's and women's basketball games, as well as at other various events such as parades and pep rallies intended to raise school spirit and helping create a home advantage for the Catamounts. The team performs both all-girl and some co-ed stunts, while also working with other Catamount spirit teams such as the WCU Dance Team, "Pride of the Mountains" Marching Band, and Purple Thunder drum line on various routines.
Additions to the 2023-24 squad will be announced directly after the tryout with the first full team meeting to follow.
