League Announces Spring Academic All-Southern Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina earned 61 spots on the Spring 2024 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday afternoon as 615 student-athletes were recognized as academic all-conference with the announcement.

The 615 spring student-athletes honored by the SoCon compete in the sports of men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, rifle, wrestling, men's and women's golf, men's and women's outdoor track and field, men's and women's tennis, baseball, and softball.

"We are proud to honor the academic excellence of each of each student athlete named to the Academic All-SoCon team," SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross said. "It takes an extraordinary amount of dedication to balance academic success with this degree of athletic performance."

WCU's 61 spring academic honorees rank fifth in the Southern Conference and joins the 42 student-athletes honored on the Fall 2023 Academic All-SoCon recognized back in January.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

A total of 48 conference student-athletes maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs with seven WCU student-athletes accomplishing the feat: Makenzie Martin (softball), Taylor Waitley (softball), Bailey Trumm (women's basketball), Reagan Trumm (women's basketball), Brie Mapanao (women's golf), Sadler Miller (women's golf) and Jennifer Wagner (indoor & outdoor track & field). Western Carolina tied with Citadel for most 4.0 GPAs.

The league's 10 women's outdoor track and field teams led the way with 86 academic all-conference selections, while the nine women's indoor track and field programs combined for 79. The eight baseball and softball programs each posted 64 selections. The 615 total selections for academic all-conference and 48 4.0s are the highest total since the spring 2021-22 that saw 640 academic honorees and 55 4.0s. honored by the league office.
