Bulldogs Use Long Ball to Complete Series Sweep

Cullowhee, N.C. – Samford continued its power surge from Friday's doubleheader sweep with five more home runs as part of a 16-2 run-rule victory on Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action at the Catamount Softball Complex.

Sophomore Sydney Dirks led the Catamounts with a pair of hits, while classmate Maya McPherson added a base knock in the defeat. Sophomore Becka Wonsick and senior Tessa Juett both had an RBI in the contest.

Samford (23-14, 5-1 SoCon) wasted little time in the series finale with a solo homer before a three-run homer saw the Bulldogs take an early 4-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs used the long ball again with a pair of two-run homers and a grand slam as the guests plated a dozen runs sending 17 batters to the plate to power its way to the 16-0 advantage.

The Catamounts pushed back in the fourth as Rylee Butler drew a leadoff walk before singles from McPherson and Dirks loaded the bases with an RBI groundout from Wonsick before a sacrifice fly from Juett pushed a second run across in the inning.

Neither team was able to muster a threat in the fifth as the Bulldogs picked up the 16-2 run-rule victory to complete the three-game sweep on Saturday afternoon.

Amanda Fulton (8-4) dropped Saturday's decision, going 0.1 innings allowing two hits and four runs in the start. Tessa Juett went 3.1 innings with four strikeouts but allowed five hits and four runs in relief work. Makenzie Martin didn't record an out allowing three hits and six runs with AG Batson going the final 1.1 innings with five hits allowed and a pair of runs and a strikeout.

With her four strikeouts in relief, Juett moved into second place in program history with 406 career strikeouts. The Berea, Ky. native surpassed Taylor Sigmon (2013-16), who totaled 404 in her time with the Purple & Gold. She became the first WCU pitcher since 2016 to eclipse 400 strikeouts.

Jordyn Partain (10-8) earned the win for Samford, going 3.0 innings with a hit allowed and a walk. Olivia Trout went an inning in relief allowing two hits and two runs with a walk allowed. Sara Bond finished the contest going the final scoreless frame for Samford on Saturday afternoon.

Western Carolina (18-18, 2-4 SoCon) begins a road swing that sees the Catamounts play nine of their next 12 games on the road, starting on Tuesday, April 1, with a visit to Knoxville to battle nationally ranked Tennessee. The single game with the Lady Vols is slated for 6 p.m. from Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
