Both teams enter Saturday's showdown riding a wave of momentum after scoring their first victory of the season last week. WCU used an offensive outburst and a dominant, 29-point third quarter to open Southern Conference play with a 50-35 win over Samford last Saturday in Cullowhee.
Campbell also scored 50 points last week, outlasting Bryant in double overtime, 50-48. The Camels scored a go-ahead touchdown with an 11-yard score with 1:15 remaining in regulation, capping a quick three-play, 53-yard drive. However, the Bulldogs marched 75 yards in seven plays for an equalizing score, finding the endzone with just six ticks remaining. Both teams scored in the first extra session, with the difference coming as the homestanding Camels converted their two-point try, and Bryant's pass attempt was batted down.
Stemming from WCU's league-opening victory, redshirt sophomore QB
Taron Dickens collected SoCon Offensive Player of the Week plaudits, while also garnering national honors from FCS Nation Radio and The College Football Network, as well as state recognition from North Carolina Football News. Dickens threw for a career-high 582 yards and a school-record tying six touchdowns as part of amassing 624 yards of total offense in guiding the Catamounts to 733 total yards.
Running back
Camury Reid likewise had a career day last Saturday, scoring four touchdowns, including three TD receptions and a two-yard rush. Three of his scores came inside the decisive third quarter.
Western North Carolina Strong:
This weekend (Sept. 27) marks the first anniversary of the devastating and deadly tropical cyclone Hurricane Helene that ravaged western North Carolina. The Catamounts are bringing back the "Prayers for Western North Carolina" helmet stickers that the squad wore following last year's tragedy.
Western Carolina vs. Campbell – The Series:
The Catamounts and Camels meet for just the fourth time in series history – but it is only the second meeting in the modern era, as the first two games on record occurred back in 1937 and 1939, both Campbell victories. WCU looks to avenge last year's 24-16 upset victory in Cullowhee, Campbell's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since reinstating football in 2008. The loss kept WCU winless in the first three series meetings. Saturday marks the first meeting in Buies Creek all-time.
About the Opponent – the Campbell Camels:
Campbell enters the weekend with a 1-3 seasonal record and 1-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). The Camels led ninth-ranked and CAA preseason favorite Rhode Island into the fourth quarter in the season opener before the Rams scored the final 17 points for the 31-20 decision. Campbell dropped its first of two regional FBS games to East Carolina, 56-3, before returning to NCAA FCS play only to see SoCon-foe Furman score the game-winning TD inside the final five minutes of a 28-24 loss.
The Camels pulled even in CAA play at 1-1 with last week's dramatic 50-48 victory over Bryant, picked 13th in the preseason poll. Tenth in the CAA coaches preseason poll, Campbell is WCU's second CAA opponent this year, as the Catamounts have already faced preseason No. 8 Elon.
McNeese State transfer quarterback Kamden Sixkiller has control of the Camel offense, passing for 893 yards and seven touchdowns after throwing for 1,513 yards and eight scores over two seasons with the Lake Charles, La., Cowboys. His top targets are sophomore WR Randall King (28 catches, 333 yds, 5 TDs) and Lamar transfer Mike Chandler II (13 catches, 77 yards, TD). JJ Cowan has rushed for a pair of scores on 35 carries for 154 yards.
Defensively, linebackers Kalen Villanueva (27 tackles) and Logan Livermon (25 tackles) pace Campbell's defense, with three defenders – Evan Spivey, Chase Arrington, and Donavan Philord – each with an interception, with Philord matched by Brandon Guzman with three PBUs.
Inside the Numbers:
Western Carolina enters the week ranked third in the NCAA FCS with 316.2 passing yards per game, while Campbell surrenders nearly 300 passing yards per game, 112th at 291.8 yards per game. The Catamounts have averaged 146.2 rushing yards per game, but could find tough sledding against a Camel defense that is 33rd nationally, surrendering just 131.5 yards per outing.
Up Next for Western Carolina:
The Catamounts remain on the road with a return to Southern Conference play next Saturday, traveling out of state for the first time this season with a trip to Spartanburg, S.C., to face the Wofford Terriers (
