Catamount Diamond Notes – Summer Update (July 16)

Marshall McGowan named NACSB National Hitter of the Week

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina freshman infielder Marshall McGowan was named the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB) National Hitter of the Week this week, on the heels of earning the Valley Baseball League's North Division Hitter of the Week accolade.
 
McGowan hit .454 last week, finishing 10-of-22, with three doubles, a pair of triples, and two home runs, amassing a 1.045 slugging percentage. He drove in 12 RBIs, producing four RBIs per game in three of the five outings during the week, while scoring seven runs for the Strasburg (Va.) Express.

McGowan has been one of the leaders for a Strasburg team that is battling for the top spot in the VBL's North Division. The Forest City, North Carolina native is hitting .321, and ranks second on the roster with 23 runs batted in. His 23 RBIs rank in the top ten of the Valley League, as does his 47 total bases and .580 slugging percentage.

Four Catamounts Named Summer League All-Stars
Western Carolina landed three players on the Valley Baseball League (VBL) All-Star team, joining the one mid-season honoree in the Florida Collegiate Summer League (FCSL).
 
Both representing the Strasburg (Va.) Express outfielder Caden Haywood and RHP Colton Starling were both dubbed All-Stars, and RHP Tyler Oaks from the Winchester (Va.) Royals joined the two on the honorary rosters at the July 7 All-Star game. Turner Gross played in the FCSL All-Star game on July 8.
 
Updates on Professional Catamounts:
Former Catamount shortstop Pascanel  Ferreras received the call-up to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, in early June. Since making the move, the Stone Mountain, Ga., product has batted .366 ( 41-of-112), with 11 doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He has driven in 27 runs with 23 runs scored over the past 31 games.
