Spartanburg, S.C. – Western Carolina senior libero Meagan Sanchez was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as announced by league officials. Sanchez earns the award for the third time this season and fourth in her career.
She is the first Catamount to receive three SoCon Player of the Week awards in the same season since the league began its weekly award during the 1985 season, and just the fifth player in league history to win three or more SoCon Defensive Player of the Week awards in the same season since the inception of the award in 2010.
Sanchez recorded 44 digs in two matches including a match-high 30 digs in a 3-2 win over Furman on Saturday evening. It marks the second time this season that Sanchez has posted 30-or-more digs in a match with her season-high of 31 coming against NC State on Sept. 13. During WCU's 3-0 win at UNCG on Friday, Sanchez posted 14 digs.
The Bristow, Va. native leads the league and ranks 10th nationally with an average of 5.50 per set. Sanchez's 319 digs is tied for seventh nationally.
Western Carolina travels to Mercer on Friday at 7 p.m. and Chattanooga on Saturday at 6 p.m. in league play before opening a three-match homestand on Oct. 11 against The Citadel.
