Cullowhee, N.C. - The Lady Catamount tennis team lost a tough match, 2-5, to Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon at home. The loss brings Western Carolina to a 2-5 (0-2 SoCon) record for the season, while the Eagles improve to 2-6 (1-1 SoCon).
Shelby Fitzpatrick and Shannon Zalinski, the number one doubles team, won their match 8-2. However, Georgia Southern won at two and three doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Number five-seeded Emmy King and number six-seeded Kristin Cotton both played strong singles matches for the Catamounts. King finished in two sets, 6-0, 6-3. Cotton also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Western kept the other four singles matches close with two of them going to three sets, but the Lady Eagles pulled out the victory.
The Lady Catamounts travel to Hilton Head, S.C. next to face Southern Mississippi, Radford, and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne Tuesday and Wednesday. Their next home match is set for Monday, March 18 at 3:00 pm against conference foe, East Tennessee State.
