Lady Catamounts Fall to Georgia Southern, 4-0, in SoCon Women's Tennis Tournament

Box Score Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team was defeated by Georgia Southern, 4-0, Thursday afternoon in the Southern Conference Tournament at the Farmfield Courts in Charleston, S.C. The Lady Catamounts finish their season at 6-13 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

Emmy King and Kristin Cotton lost their doubles match to Charlotte Bruneteaux and Brooke McNamee, 8-1. Erin Johnson and Kristin Munn fell to Sally Williams and Sarah Iqbal, 8-1 also. Shelby Fitzpatrick and Shannon Zalinski did not finish their match since the team had already lost the point for doubles.

In singles action, Kristin Munn was defeated by Amy Bartlett (6-2, 6-2), Shannon Zalinski fell to Brooke McNamee (6-2, 6-3), and Erin Johnson lost to Charlotte Bruneteaux (6-2, 6-2). The two seniors, in their final career match, along with freshman Kristin Cotton, were hanging on in their matches before being stopped due to Western having already lost four of seven points. Senior Shelby Fitzpatrick was leading Iqbal (6-1, 5-2) in her match before being pulled. Senior Emmy King had forced a third set in her match to Callie Ward and was tied in that last set, 2-2. Kristin Cotton was ahead in the second set of her match with Sally Williams, 5-2, before being stopped.

Due to the cancellation of the UNC Asheville match on Tuesday, Fitzpatrick and King were not able to have their Senior Day at Western. However, both said that they have enjoyed their time at Western Carolina and appreciate everyone's support throughout their careers as Catamounts.

"I want to thank my teammates for their support," said King. "And most importantly I want to thank Coach (Jan Stubbs) for helping build this program. We really reached an important goal of winning a conference match this year."

"We were so pumped up for this match," said Fitzpatrick. "We played hard, but we just got off to a bumpy start and couldn't get the win. I've had a great year though. We were a really close team, and that made it fun."
