Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's tennis team fell to Georgia Southern, 7-0, Saturday at the Reid Gym Courts. The loss gives WCU a 5-8 record overall and an 0-4 mark in the Southern Conference.
After rain held off play for an hour and a half, the two teams took the court. The Eagles claimed two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the match. Amy Bartlett and Stephanie Tyrell defeated Western Carolina's Shannon Zalinski and Megan Bechtold, 8-2, at number one doubles. At the number two doubles position, Callie Ward and Marion Leuiller beat Rocio Perez and Erin Johnson, 8-3, to win the point. Katie VanEwyk and Kristin Cotton recorded the lone doubles victory for the Cats, edging Kim Wollet and Charlotte Burneteaux, 8-6.
In singles play, GSU claimed all six matches. Bechtold took her match to a third set after coming back in second, but fell 6-0 in the final act. Cotton also played a three-set match, but lost 6-4 in the last one.
The Catamounts return to action Tuesday, April 1, to take on the Lady Maocs in Chattanooga, Tenn., at 2:00 pm.
