Western Carolina Soccer Team Blanks Elon 4-0 in Southern Conference Opener

Elon, N.C - Western Carolina (1-2-1, 1-0-0 Southern) scored less than 10 minutes into the match and then made that goal stand up as the Catamounts defeated Elon (0-5-0, 0-1-0) 4-0 in the Southern Conference women's soccer opener for both squads. The win gives WCU its eighth consecutive SoCon road match without a loss, dating back to October 21, 2001.

Felicia Wilson netted the first score at 8:01 with assists from Megan Reilly and Natasha Moore to put the Catamounts ahead. The Catamounts would add to their lead in the 31st minute when Stephanie Svoboda booted a shot past the Elon keeper to put Western Carolina up by a 2-0 margin. An own goal would give the Catamounts a 3-0 lead at the break.

Western Carolina found the back of the net once more in the second half, this time with less than one minute to play. Megan Chambers hit Jordan Howell with a ball deep up the middle of the field that Howell deposited in the back of the net for the final tally of the contest.

Western Carolina outshot Elon by a 22-15 margin, including 13-8 on goal, Tina Weaver recorded 83:27 in the net for the Cats recording all of WCU's eight saves. Freshman Alesha Row played the remaining minutes to combine for the Cat's shutout.

The Cats remain on the road as they are set to face East Carolina Sunday, September 14, in Greenville, N.C.
