Catamounts Play Elon to a 3-3 Tie in Overtime

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Lady Catamounts played the Elon Phoenix to a 3-3 tie after two rounds of overtime in Southern Conference action Friday afternoon at Schrader Field.

Western sophmore Stephanie Svoboda got the Cats off to a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the first half as she headed in a pass from freshman Lauren Atkinson. Svoboda put WCU up 2-0 just seven minutes later as she found the back of the net on a pass from freshman Melissa Berry giving Svoboda her fifth goal of the season.

Late in the first half, Phoenix freshman Tina Longo gave Elon their first goal of the game on a penalty kick. The two teams went into half-time with the score at 2-1.

Early in the second half (59:48), Atkinson broke through Phoenix defenders to score for her second goal of the season. Elon trimmed its defcit to one (3-2) with a goal late in the second half as sophomore Jaclyn Immordino found a pass from Longo and took it to the goal for the Phoenix's second goal of the game. Elon senior Kelly Williams evened the score with just four minutes to go in the second half on a pass from junior Emily Chesney.

Catamount sophomore Jennifer Deck made her goalkeeper debut as she grabbed four saves for Western in the second half. Sophmore Alesha Row scooped up two saves for the Cats in the first half. Both goalkeepers for the Phoenix saw playing time as well, with senior Kara Zagol and freshman Amy Cahill grabbing two saves a piece for Elon.

Western Carolina returns to action against East Tennessee State in a Southern Conference match on Sunday, October 3. Match time is set to begin at 2:00 pm at East Tennessee State.
