STATESBORO, Ga. -
Western Carolina's women's tennis team fell to Georgia Southern, 1-5, in a match that extended into Friday as several rain delays slowed the progress of the match. The Catamounts fall to 0-5 (0-1 SoCon) on the season as the Eagles improve to 3-4 (1-0 SoCon).
Freshman Megan McLinden picked up her second singles win of the season as she defeated Caitlin Kitchen in three sets. After dropping the first set to Kitchen, McLinden fought back to win the second set 7-5. In the tiebreak set, McLinden pulled out the close victory with a 10-8 win.
Junior Karen Jiménez's three-match win streak came to an end Friday as she fell to Alexis Prickett in a close two-set match. Jiménez fell 4-6 and 7-6 (7-5).
The doubles matches were canceled with inclement weather still around Statesboro.
"Being that the match started on Thursday and ended on Friday with a couple rain delays and especially with Megan McLinden being the last match, I thought Megan showed a lot of poise for holding tough and pulling out a tough, tiebreak win in her first Southern Conference match," said Head Coach Chris Wollett.
Western Carolina will return to the courts as the Catamounts travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to take on East Tennessee State on Sunday with the match set to begin at 2 p.m.
