Catamounts Get Home Win over Appalachian State

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After an 11-day break, Western Carolina women's tennis got back on the courts and picked up a 5-1 win over visiting Appalachian State Wednesday at the Catamount Tennis Complex. 
 
TURNING POINT:
The Catamounts won the doubles point, winning at No. 2 doubles and earning the No. 3 doubles victory by default, and took four of the six singles matches completed or played. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Catamounts began the doubles taking No. 3 by default as the Mountaineers did not have a tandem for that spot. Appalachian State took the No. 1 doubles defeating Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco so the doubles were tied. Kata Foldeak and Miray Konar battled to take the doubles point 7-6 (8-6).
  •  Western Carolina went on to win four of the six singles matches played. No. 6 singles were awarded to WCU by default as the App State did not have a player for that spot. The No. 4 singles were halted with Jacy Smith winning the first set 6-5 and down 3-5 in the second set. 
  • Appalachian State came away with one point earning a win at No. 1 singles as Foldeak fell 6-2, 6-2.
  • Freshman Luzia Obermeier won a three-set match taking the first set 6-3, dropping the second set 0-6, and bouncing back to blank her opponent 6-0 in the deciding third set. 
  • Miray Konar and Jordyn King also picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles respectively.  
 
 
 NOTES:
  • King, after not playing a singles match in 2021, played in her second singles match against Appalachian State. She has a 2-0 record in singles. 
  • Western Carolina has won five of its last six matches. 
  • The Catamounts are now 3-0 at home. 
 
UPCOMING:
 Western Carolina begins a two-match road swing this weekend dipping back into Southern Conference play Saturday at UNCG and then traveling to North Carolina Central Sunday.
