Tennis Heads to Greensboro for UNCG Invite

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After a nearly a month hiatus, Western Carolina women's tennis is slated to return to the courts on Friday to take part in the Spartan Fall Invitational, hosted by conference foe UNCG. The three-day tournament is slated to be contested at the UNCG Tennis Courts in Greensboro.

The Catamounts are slated to compete against student-athletes from Longwood, N.C. A&T, Appalachian State, Hampton, East Carolina, and the host Spartans. WCU is currently scheduled to battle the Pirates in singles play on Friday with doubles play on Saturday. The schedule for Sunday is to be determined for the seven teams in Greensboro.

The weekend is slated to begin on Friday afternoon with the Catamounts squaring off against ECU before battling Appalachian State, ECU, N.C. A&T and UNCG throughout the afternoon on Saturday in Greensboro.

Western Carolina began the fall with a strong showing in the WCU Fall Invite as the Catamounts hosted Kennesaw State and Gardner-Webb in mid-September. In singles play, Isabella Sambola and Jade Groen both went 3-0 in their respective matches as Angela Perez and Chloe Schwarz were perfect in their on-court action. Sambola, Perez and Leilany Ipunesso each were 2-0 in doubles action.

The Catamounts conclude the fall slate beginning on Oct. 19 with the ITA Carolina Regionals set to be hosted in Chapel Hill, N.C…

The Catamounts return all eight players from a team that set a school record last spring with 14 wins. The eight returners are led by the reigning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Isabella Sambola along with Jade Groen, Andrea Redondo, and Leilany Ipunesso who each received plaudits from the SoCon following the record-setting season.
