Edisto Island, S.C. – Western Carolina women's golf came home in ninth place out of the 16-team field as play concluded Tuesday at the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston at the par-70, 5,816-yard Plantation Course at Edisto.
The ninth-place showing was the 16th-straight Top 10 finish for Catamount women's golf dating back to the 2021-22 season.
Junior
Elizabeth Lohbauer and sophomore
Brie Mapanao both posted Top 20 finishes to lead the Catamounts in their penultimate event of the fall. Lohbauer finished with a three-round score of 217 with Mapanao a stroke back at 218.
Opening on the par-4 seventh, Lohbauer countered six bogeys with a trio of birdies to card a third-round score of 73. The Venice, Fla., product headed to the front for her final six holes at 4-over par. But she managed to birdie twice against her sixth bogey down the stretch finishing with a team-best nine birdies at the event. Mapanao continued to be steady, following up consecutive rounds of 3-over par 73 with a team-low, 2-over par 72 on Tuesday, charting two of her six birdies over the final 18 holes.
Lohbauer was tied for eighth in par-3 scoring, shooting even on the shortest layouts, while Mapanao finished tied for sixth in par-4 scoring at 2-over (4.07).
Rounding out WCU's scoring five was redshirt junior
Kayleigh Baker who slipped into a two-way tie for 40th with a final-round score of 76. Fifth-year senior
Victoria Ladd also shot 76 for a total of 229, up three spots into a tie for 59th, while sophomore
Sadler Miller posted her best round of the event at 6-over par 76, likewise advancing three positions to come home in a tie for 86th overall. Ladd finished second on the squad with eight birdies with Miller charting seven.
Playing unattached as an individual, junior
Kaitlyn Wingnean climbed five positions in the final round, recording her best round of the event at 4-over par 74 and a two-day total of 236. The Edmonton, Alberta, product collected her third birdie of the tournament on Tuesday and scored par on the final five holes of the event.
Event host College of Charleston claimed a four-stroke victory over Georgia Southern, 846-to-850. East Carolina was third with a two-day total of 862, with Rollins College (863) and Elon (871) rounding out the top five.
Georgia Southern's Louise Reau claimed individual medalist honors by three strokes over Bernardita Villalba of Rollins College, 205-to-208.
Western Carolina concludes the fall portion of its 2023-24 schedule next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 23-24, as the Catamounts travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for the Terrier Intercollegiate, hosted by fellow Southern Conference foe Wofford at the Carolina Country Club.
