Mattison Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina women's indoor track & field runner Kate Mattison has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Feb. 8-14. The selection is made by the conference office from nominations submitted by the sports information or media relations personnel at each institution.

A fifth-year senior from Oconee, Ga., Mattison has a 4.0 GPA and is pursuing a Master of Health Science degree.

Mattison lowered her own school and personal records in the mile at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Saturday, turning in a time of 4:55.07 to finish 11th in the event and drop 0.90 seconds from the program record she set on Jan. 21 at the Carolina Challenge. She also competed in the 3,000-meter run at the meet on Friday, finishing 14th in a personal-best time of 9:52.01.

Her mile time ranks eighth in the SoCon this season, while her 3,000m time is good for ninth.

Mattison is the third Western Carolina student-athlete to earn SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2022-23 season. She joins Catamount women's basketball fifth-year senior Kyla Allison who was honored on Jan. 4, 2023, and women's soccer player Maggie Lloyd who earned the distinction on Oct. 12, 2022.

WCU is off this weekend and turns its attention to the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Lexington, Va. on Feb. 25-26.
