CULLOWHEE, N.C. – For the seventh time in program history and the second time in the past three seasons, Western Carolina University hosts the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Monday and Tuesday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Admission to the event is free. Portions of the meet will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) on Tuesday with free live stats available via links on catamountsports.com as well as the championship page at SoConSports.com.
"We're excited for the opportunity to be competing for a championship at home," said WCU head coach
Jesse Norman. "This gives all our student-athletes an opportunity to compete at a high level in front of family, friends, and their supporters."
Entering the championship meet, WCU student-athletes hold the top seasonal mark in the men's 100-meter dash (
David Miles, 10.51), men's 4x400-meter relay (
Noah Straley,
Elias Barton,
David Miles,
Michael Harris, 3:14.97), men's long jump (
Javon Brown, 7.32 meters), and men's triple jump (
Javon Brown, 15.20 meters) with several others ranking in the top-five in the conference in both men's and women's events.
WCU looks to defend its 2022 titles in in the men's 400-meter dash with
Michael Harris as well as in the men's triple jump with
Javon Brown. The WCU men are also the reigning 4x100-meter relay champions.
Samford enters the meet as the two-time defending men's and women's champions after sweeping the meet in Birmingham last year. WCU's men finished as the runner-up in the SoCon Indoor Championship earlier this year.
Qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminaries will be announced on Thursday, May 18. The 2023 East Prelims are scheduled for May 24-27 in Jacksonville, Fla.
