Spartanburg, S.C. – The Western Carolina Catamount women's tennis team enjoyed a successful open at the Big Southern Shootout at Wofford on Friday, going 4-1 on the singles courts against the Radford Highlanders and splitting their doubles matchups with Gardner-Webb on the first day of the three-day cross conference fall tournament.  
 
Play opened for the Catamounts on the doubles courts where the pairings of Jade Groen and Madison Schwarz, as well as Isabella Sambola and Andrea Redondo battled with their Gardner-Webb counterparts. The duos split on the day, with Sambola and Redondo powering through for a 6-4 victory, though Groen and Schwarz fell by the same score to the Runnin' Bulldogs tandem.  
 
Undeterred, Groen and Schwarz bounced back in their singles matches with strong, straight-set victories over Radford on the first and third courts. Andrea Redondo was the only Catamount to go undefeated her two matches on the day, taking a straight-set victory of her own on the fourth court.
 
Isabella Sambola, in her first singles action of the fall, coasted to a 6-1 set two victory even the count at 1-all after falling in the first set 7-5 to Radford's Michaela Stephens, but fell in a high-scoring tiebreaker 11-9. Dasha Osadova joined Andrea Redondo as the only other undefeated Catamount on the first day of play, rallying from a 6-4 set one defeat to rattle off a 6-3 set two win and a 10-6 tiebreaker edge.  
 
The Purple and Gold returns to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. with doubles matches against Longwood and Radford. One Catamount will see Radford in singles action again tomorrow, though most of the team will face Longwood.
