Cullowhee, N.C. -- The Western Carolina track and field teams return to Cullowhee on Saturday after finishing the highly-competitive Duke Invitational with eight Top 10 finishes on the final day of competition.
The highest finish on the day for the Catamounts came in the men's 4x400-meter relay as the quartet of Quinton Godfrey, Teddy Ayden, David Miles, and Noah Straley took a sixth-place finish thanks to their time of 3.14.26. The Catamounts just edged out seventh-place finisher Kent State whose final runner crossed the finish line just .26 seconds behind Straley.
The men's team took two more Top 10 finishes in the individual events as John Davis and Jackson Livingston finished eighth and ninth in both the 800-meter run and the javelin, respectively. Both Catamounts recorded season-best marks in their events. In addition, Jasmine Greene recorded her best mark of the 2024 outdoor season in the triple jump. The sophomore's mark of 11.63 meters secured her a 10th-place finish in the event as she was one of only ten athletes in Durham to clear 11.60m during competition.
The Purple and Gold recorded most of their success in the combined events as Heidi Hudson, Damon Worley, and Ethan Hibberts parlayed their success on the first day into Top 10 performances on the second. Hudson took a sixth-place finish in the heptathlon with 4,692 points, while Worley was one of only eight athletes to finish with 6000+ points in the decathlon. Ethan Hibberts secured his place in the top ten with a ninth-place finish in the 1500m, edging out 11th-place finisher Kahlil West by eight points. Despite entering the second day of competition outside the leaderboard, freshman Colby Capps made a heroic second-day push, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 1500m and a fifth-place placement in the pole vault to leap up the decathlon standings, ending the final day of competition in ninth place overall.
Western Carolina track & field returns to the track and circle respectively as they prepare to host the annual Catamount Classic. WCU's sole home meet of the season is scheduled for April 18-19, on-campus at the Catamount Athletics Complex. Day two of the meet is slated to be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required).
