Catamount Football ‘26: Position Preview – Quarterbacks

Composed, competitive, and striving for consistency

Cullowhee, N.C. – Following one of the most productive seasons by a quarterback in program history, Western Carolina enters a new era under center in 2026.

With Walter Payton Award runner-up Taron Dickens having departed after helping orchestrate a record-breaking offensive campaign, the Catamounts turn the page with six underclassmen competing to lead one of the most explosive offenses in the FCS.

Dickens capped his stellar career by guiding Western Carolina to a fifth consecutive season with more than 5,000 yards of total offense. The Catamounts shattered program records with 5,920 yards of total offense, including school-best marks of 4,268 passing yards and 44 touchdown passes. Both totals surpassed previous records established under head coach Kerwin Bell's high-powered offensive system.

The challenge now becomes replacing that production. Fortunately, the quarterback room is being guided by someone who understands both the position and the program.

Former Catamount quarterback Parish Metzger returned to his alma mater last season as a quality control coach after spending a year on staff at Pittsburgh under former WCU offensive coordinator Kade Bell. Having transitioned into coaching while still an undergraduate, Metzger brought an intimate understanding of the position and the demands that accompany it. Following the offseason, he assumed responsibility for coaching the quarterbacks.

Working alongside second-year offensive coordinator Rylan Wells, another former collegiate quarterback, Metzger has overseen a highly competitive battle throughout spring practice and preseason camp. A trio of signal callers has emerged at the forefront of that competition.

Returning quarterback Isaac Lee, NC State transfer Lex Thomas, and early enrollee freshman Patrick Harding have all positioned themselves as candidates to earn the opening-day start. Harding's decision to arrive in Cullowhee early allowed him additional time to absorb the complexities of Bell's offense, accelerating his development entering fall camp.

Also competing in the room are returner Ian Grissom and true freshmen Jake Morrow and Caleb Tucker, giving Western Carolina a blend of experience, athleticism, and long-term potential.

"I love the group of guys we have in our quarterback room," Metzger said. "They show up every day with the right mindset, ready to work and attack the challenge of being a quarterback."
For Metzger, success at the position begins long before kickoff.

"Playing quarterback is a demanding role; we ask a lot of them, and success comes from being the same guy every day," he said. "Consistency equals greatness. When you are consistent, it builds confidence. The focus is always on the team and finding ways to get to the end zone. That starts with preparation, controlling what we can control, and understanding every situation.

"We want to be composed when things get chaotic and maintain control because the team feeds off our energy and leadership."

Lee enters the season with the most game experience among the contenders. Listed as a junior under the NCAA's current eligibility structure, he appeared in five games last season, completing 31 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns. His dual-threat ability was evident as he also rushed 21 times for 145 yards and a score.

Thomas, meanwhile, arrived from NC State after seeing action in four games across two seasons in Raleigh. The junior completed seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown during limited opportunities with the Wolfpack and has showcased both accuracy and mobility throughout spring and preseason practice.

Harding has quickly accelerated his climb up the depth chart. The Zephyrhills, Florida, native passed for more than 2,500 yards and 33 touchdowns during his senior prep season and has impressed coaches with his command of the offense and ability to process information quickly.

The competition extends beyond the top three.

Morrow arrives after a prolific high school career that included more than 6,500 passing yards, over 2,000 rushing yards, and more than 100 total touchdowns. A Michigan Player of the Year finalist, he threw for 3,100 yards and 43 touchdowns as a senior while earning first-team All-District, All-Region, and All-State honors. Tucker enjoyed an equally decorated final prep campaign in Virginia, earning District and Region Player of the Year accolades after amassing 3,470 passing yards and 52 touchdown passes.

Grissom begins his second season in Cullowhee after a record-setting career at Rock Hill High School in South Carolina, where he threw for more than 6,600 yards and 90 touchdowns while earning multiple All-State selections.

Regardless of who ultimately earns the first snap, Metzger believes the expectations remain unchanged.

"I expect our quarterbacks to be hungry, competitive, and comfortable with being uncomfortable," Metzger said. "Pressure is a privilege, and it is earned. We must be great under pressure.

"We want guys who lead through action, who understand the importance of preparation, and who embrace the responsibility that comes with playing quarterback. The best quarterbacks elevate everyone around them, and that's ultimately what we're asking our guys to do. Be dependable, be consistent, and be the type of leader your teammates can count on when the game is on the line."

Those expectations are reinforced daily through three pillars that Metzger and the offensive staff emphasize: be a composed competitor, be a great decision-maker, and distribute the football.

"This position carries a lot of responsibility, and that's part of what makes it special," Metzger said. "Our job is to stay level-headed, lead by example, and do whatever it takes to help this team win."

A former quarterback himself, Metzger draws inspiration from some of the game's most accomplished signal callers.

"I've always admired quarterbacks like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning because they proved that the position is about much more than just arm talent," Metzger said. "What separated them was their approach. They were students of the game, elite communicators, and relentless competitors. They set the tone for their teams through preparation and attention to detail. Those are qualities we talk about every day in our room."

As Western Carolina prepares for another season under Bell's offense, the quarterback battle remains unsettled. What has become clear, however, is the standard. The Catamounts expect their next quarterback not simply to manage the offense, but to lead it with composure, consistency, and confidence.

Western Carolina opens the 2026 season at home on Saturday, Aug. 29, hosting Eastern Kentucky under the lights at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Catamounts look to "Blackout Whitmire," wearing their new "Night Cat" black Nike uniforms, with all fans encouraged to wear their black WCU gear to the game.

In addition to the first 3,500 fans receiving FREE black WCU T-shirts, Catamount Athletics marketing will pass out 4,000 Blackout thunder sticks, courtesy of The Everson. Before the game, one of the best FCS football traditions returns as we celebrate the 15th Annual Freshmen Run, as WCU's Class of 2030 – one of the largest in school history – will run through the pregame tunnel to lead out the Catamount football team.

Also highlighting the jam-packed home opener, Catamount Athletics and Vannoy Construction present a special drone light show, produced by SkyElements, that will light up the western North Carolina sky as part of the festivities.

The home-opener is presented by Ingles and media partners Kiss Country and Star 104.3.

Both season and single-game tickets and gameday parking for all six home dates in #CatamountCountry are on sale now through the Catamount Athletics ticket office on the first floor of the Ramsey Center, by phone at (828) 227-2401, and online at CatamountSports.com.
