Greenville, S.C. – Western Carolina Cheerleading punched its ticket to the 2027 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Collegiate Cheer and Dance Nationals, earning a silver bid after capturing first place at an NCA camp hosted by Furman this weekend.
With the camp win, the Catamount cheerleaders not only collected a team trophy, but also earned a spot in April's national competition. The NCA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Nationals is regarded as one of the premier championships in collegiate cheerleading, bringing together top programs from across the country each spring in Daytona Beach, Fla. The silver bid includes partial financial support from the NCA to aid the team's trip to the Sunshine State.
The team traveled to the Upstate of South Carolina for the skills camp, learning new material, trying new skills, and strengthening the team bond ahead of next Saturday's home-opening football game, under the new lights at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.
Among the teams competing in the preseason camp were fellow Southern Conference foe – and event host – Furman, with the cheer teams from Gardner-Webb, USC Upstate, Anderson University, and Piedmont University.
"This team's work ethic and commitment to one another showed throughout the weekend," Catamount head coach
Corbin Huntley said. "They embraced every challenge, supported one another, and represented Western Carolina with tremendous energy. Earning a bid to Daytona is a great reward for their effort, and we're excited to keep building momentum heading into football season."
