Birmingham, Ala. -- The Western Carolina Catamounts are returning to Cullowhee a little shinier as they wrapped up the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships with eight medal-winning efforts, highlighted by conference championships by
Heidi Hudson and
Jasmine Greene in the high and triple jumps respectively.
Hudson only needed three heights to secure the gold medal in the event, clearing 1.65m and 1.75m on her first attempts. The freshman Catamount cleared the bar at 1.70m on her second attempt, putting her in third place for a brief time before being the only athlete to move past the 1.75m height. Hudson's victory in the event gave the Catamounts the long jump sweep for the 2024 season as
Imani Boyd took the event during the indoor season with a 1.73 meter clear. The Hattiesburg, Miss. product is currently tied for 20th in the event in the East Region and is primed to represent the Catamounts at the East First Round of the NCAA Championships in Lexington, Kentucky later this month.
Leading the event coming into the day,
Jasmine Greene left little doubt that she would be the back-to-back outdoor triple jump champion as the sophomore Catamount posted would-be winning distances on three of her five marks on the day. Her distances of 11.33 meters on her third attempt and 11.36 meters on her fifth would have secured her the gold medal, but Greene outdid her previous marks with her final leap of the day, finishing the event with a top distance of 11.38 meters. She has now finished atop the Southern Conference podium in the triple jump in back-to-back seasons and has a third-place finish in the event at last year's indoor championships to her name as well.
Shaneil Lysight took the top individual finish on the track for the women's team after blazing to a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.22s. Lysight took a third place finish in the preliminary round and was able to improve upon her third-place time of 14.24s while pushing for the silver medal in the finals. The sophomore finished .30 seconds faster than third-place JaKayla Campbell of Wofford.
On the men's side, the top individual finish of the day belonged to
Damon Worley in the decathlon. Worley entered the day just off the podium in the decathlon, but a solid finish in the 110m hurdles and two second place finishes in the pole vault and the javelin throw gave the junior enough leeway to find his way to the podium, taking bronze in the combined event with a total of 6434 points. The third-place conference finish is the second of Worley's career as he took bronze in the men's heptathlon during the indoor season as well.
As for the relay events, three out of four Catamount squads earned silver medals, with the 4x400 meter teams closing out the 2024 conference meet. The women's 4x100 meter squad of
Armani Blair,
Jasmine Greene,
Mikayla Turner and
Cymoria Thomas posted a time of 46.96s to take second place. The women's 4x400 meter team
Imani Boyd,
Leah Butler,
Kyndal Saunders and
Nytrinitey Jenkins crusied to a second-place finish with a time of 3:51.45 while the men's team of
Quinton Godfrey,
Noah Straley,
Henry Stecher, and
Elias Barton also took silver with a 3:14.92 finish.
Through two days of action, the Catamounts earned a total of ten medals across ten different events. Additionally, the Catamounts took 23 all-freshman team nods during the two days of competition.
