Dr. Bob Ray - Basketball, Coach & Administrator - (1951-92)
Men's basketball all-star during the 1950s, was Western Carolina's first-ever full-time assistant men's basketball coach, distinguished departmental head and educator, recognized environmental advocate, public servant, and WCU benefactor. Played basketball for three seasons (1952-54) before serving in the military for two years and returned for senior season (1957). Averaged 13 points per game as a sophomore and 16 as a junior and was named All-North State Conference. Captain of the 1957 team. Served as an assistant basketball coach for seven years (1962-69) and helped develop three WCU All-America players, six winning teams and recruited the majority of players during that period. Served as head of WCU's Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department for 11 years from 1982 through 1992.
